Another Alli Public Service Announcement

Ok folks, another issue you might want to know about:
----------------------------------------
The FDA has no effective system in place for
handling drug safety problems once a drug is on the market.
Congress' own investigative arm just came down hard on the FDA
for conducting weak oversight.

In particular, drug companies are allowed to keep secret the
information they gather from studies of drugs currently on the market.

Right now, there's a bill gaining momentum in Minnesota that
would require drug companies to disclose all information--good or
bad--on the drugs they make.

With the legislative session winding down, the Governor's support is
critical to getting this bill passed--

The General Accounting Office (GAO) study showed that we need to
do more here in Minnesota to protect our health and that of our
families.

With drug companies working hard to defeat this bill, the Governor
needs to hear from all MN residents.

Still not convinced? Here's some more info:
  • A 2005 Wall St Journal poll showed that 60% of Americans are not confident that drug companies will publish information about drug side effects as soon as they get this information. Americans are right to distrust drug companies, based on recent scandals.
  • In 2004, Merck withdrew Vioxx from the market. But Merck knew four years earlier about increased heart attack risks from Vioxx, yet it did not disclose these clinical trial results. Up to 140,000 unnecessary cases of serious heart disease resulted from the use of Vioxx.
  • Also in 2004, we learned that GlaxoSmithKline hid data about their drug Paxil that showed the antidepressant greatly increased suicide risk in teens.
  • SF 3342 is needed to prevent public health disasters like Vioxx and Paxil from happening again. Full disclosure of drug studies will give doctors the information they need to make the best prescribing decisions.
